Due to our esteemed Emperor’s love for Dragon Ball, we here on the site have been getting a lot of interest from Dragon Ball fans. However, I have personally never watched a single episode ever. This was mostly purposely, as sometimes the look of an animated character makes me want to steer as far away from the show as possible. (One Piece is the poster boy for this.) However, I believe in actual fairness, so I have endeavored to watch an episode. My research said that “Bulma and Son Goku” is the first episode, so I’ll be watching it. As with my previous first looks, I will give snarky comments and then go full spoilerish in my analysis.
For now the episode in on Youtube:
Only 20:44 long. Already promising.
OK, 30 seconds in and we get the full premise of the series.. Promising.
1:06 He is clearly monkeying around.
1:34 I’ll take stereotypes for $1000 Alex.
2:05 LMAO. Now I feel the need to build a log cabin.
3:30 You go searching for fish by swinging thru trees? Trust me, as I penguin I know these things…fish are not found in trees.
3:44 Apples to go with fish? As The Miz would say: Really? Really?
3:52 The poor cat thinks you are rotten to the core.
4:19 Poor cat shouldn’t have taken classes from Wile E. Coyote.
4:31 Now THERE’s where you find fish.
4:41 BAD FAN SERVICE BAD FAN SERVICE OWW MY EYES OWW MY EYES!!!
5:10 I am cringing. Fishing out of water you just pee’d in with your tail??? I wish I drank so that I could take a shot now.
5:34 I hope he likes his fish grilled.
6:34 I’ll take a shot here that this may be why I never heard of Dragon Ball being on over the air TV.
7:57 Yes girls all have tails, some much nicer than others, but not like that.
10:10 Wow what Goku’s doing right now looks VERY inappropriate.
13:09 OF COURSE!!!
14:21 That proves this was translated for American English, not British English.
15:10 That particular wish would make all the SJWs cringe…and of course that is all right by me. 😀
16:34 If you were older, you’d be enjoying the bike ride a lot more #justsaying
18:15 I guess Goku is too tied up for dinner now.
19:47 When all else fails…slapstick.
Well that was different. I can definitely say that I enjoyed watching the episode, and may very well watch the next episode sometime soon. The premise is rather basic, with a boy vs. girl team-up looking for various macgruffins. But things are basic for a reason…they set out a firm foundation that can be built around. It might be fun to watch whatever was the last Dragon Ball thing ever produced, just to see what Goku leaving behind his home eventually led to.
Unlike my previous three first looks, I came into Dragon Ball fairly cold. I already knew plenty about Batman, Wolverine, and the X-Men, so I could compare and contrast between the comics and movies of yesterday to what I saw in the movies. But here I am only familiar to anime in general. As a kid I watched Tranzor Z and a re-edited Gatchaman called Battle of the Planets. In the 90’s I was in my mid-20s when I was exposed to Sailor Moon and whatever a friend who was an Otaku got me to watch while visiting his place or when he brought something to the college’s Gamers Guild. I have seen various Ranma 1/2s and even seen a horrifying anime movie I can’t remember the name of, but it was ridiculously intense. Save for the cutesy R-rated scenes, this would have been quite enjoyable to watch when I was in middle school.
There was a scene in the animated Star Trek series where Spock said his fellow Vulcans found some things relaxing, and that his mother was a big fan of Lewis Carroll’s work, hence Spock’s knowledge of a Wonderland reference by Captain Kirk. I find this episode similarly relaxing, and will endeavor to watch more episodes. Then again, I have been meaning to watch Sailor Moon Crystal and months later I still haven’t gotten around to watching the fourth episode.
Really, if you want profound commentary on Dragon Ball, you should be watching the videos posted on our Geekdom 101 Youtube page, the link to which can be found on the left. I’m the guy to go to for G1 Transformers info instead. Of course, I wonder what would happen if I did become a Dragon Ball fan…
Anyways, I am still ironing out the kinks to Icygeek.com. Until next week, you can check me out there. Next week, another Pop Culture Curmudguin.
