Should I Toon In? Dan VS.

Today on “Should I Toon In?” I take a look at a show that’s been around for a couple of months that I’ve only just gotten around to watching even though I had about 8 saved on my DVR. Today’s show is yet another Hub original, “Dan Vs”. A strange comedy about the misadventures of Dan, a miserable, angry, vindictive, sarcastic, manipulative, paranoid, rude, devious, short tempered, Machiavellian jerk who cares about no one but himself. He lives alone his ratty and disgusting apartment and has really only one friend and he probably doesn’t even want that many.

You might find it odd to base your entire show around someone with such deplorable personality traits yet somehow Dan still manages to come off likable in his own eccentric way. How is that possible? Well, to understand that let me first explain the premise of the show.

Each episode starts off in a fairly formulaic way. Dan will somehow end up being offended by something or someone through a wacky set of circumstances such as being mugged for his cookies bye a Ninja or having his car destroyed by beach goers. Dan will then inevitably declare vengeance on said party by crying out their name and having the title come up, “Dan Vs. The Beach” or “Dan Vs. The Ninja”. Though this happens every episode is quite entertaining to see how they get to Dan being pushed past his breaking point.

The rest of the show follows Dan somehow getting his best friend Chris and sometimes Chris’s wife Elise to assist him in getting his revenge. Chris is a laidback guy who probably couldn’t explain WHY he’s best friends with Dan and why he let’s Dan talk him into these crazy plots. Despite being best friends Dan will often treat Chris rudely and completely take advantage of him and yet Chris will always be there for him. You know, now that I think of it, I think everyone knows a person like Chris to some extent. Heck, probably everyone knows someone like Dan as well. If you don’t.. then you’re probably either a “Chris” or a “Dan” yourself.

Chris’s wife Elise is the basass of the show. It’s never completely revealed what her job is but she does secret missions for the goverment, work on top secret science experiments and even has a shady past as a ninja master. Sometimes she less than enthusiastic about Chris helping Dan out with his crazy schemes and other times she comes along and ends up being the only competent one of the group. Then of course there was the time she helped Dan get revenge on the state of New Mexico because she has a grudge with that horrible state as well. No, I’m not making this up and yes, it is as hilarious as it sound.

The show often builds slowly and you never really know if Dan is paranoid or if said party really DOES have it in for Dan, as has been the case in multiple episodes. You never really know if Dan’s wild theories are actually true or if he’s just insane… or both. What you can be sure of that this show really does know how to build to a crescendo. Often this show will start slow and get crazier as it goes on, and often the hilarity will build with the insanity.

There’s really not much else I can say about the show, not without spoiling punchlines and story twists and endings. So, to sum up, ‘Should You Toon In?’ I’d say definitely yes. I really enjoy this show, its very different than what you normally are given on TV nowadays. It’s a show about a rude jerk with a short fuse constantly out for revenge, this is not something you see often. The characters are likable, even Dan. The stories are both funny and clever and often builds to a climax. So I’d say this is one you have to check out for yourself. Dan Vs. airs Saturday Nights at 8pm on The Hub, which has quickly become my favorite station on TV.
